ARBUTUS BLUFF

A contemporary beach house situated on a rocky point with 280 feet of waterfront on a very narrow lot. On the beach level, she wanted to be part of the beach community and still have private spaces. With only a small portion of the property beachfront and a 270-degree view of the coastal islands, she also wanted the design to accommodate the option of connecting a larger house at a higher elevation on the top of the bluff. A “slip and slide” design was used to maximize the beachfront square footage, create a covered dining deck next to a dramatic rock wall, and an open sundeck with a hot tub off the master bedroom on the second floor. The result – a cozy space that was equally fantastic for winter storm watching next to a fire, as it was open airy space and present to the water.

Special features like a master shower with a glass wall overlooking the crashing waves. Beautifully landscaping stepping stones to a bridge entrance that steps with every room present to the ocean. Heated concrete floors and a gas fireplace to stay cozy watching winter storms. Driftwood colour shingles that blend into the angular rocks, respecting the integrity of the bluff and natural feel, and make the home look like it is part of the landscape. The unique design also enabled us to keep the remarkable Arbutus trees the property was named after.
